Philosophy or Christ?
False Dichotomies
[Col 2:8 KJV] "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ."
Many sincere Christians cite Colossians 2:8 as universal Scriptural proof that any use of philosophy is inherently wrong.
They create a false dichotomy - either philosophy or Christ. There is no middle ground.
Unfortunately, this is a weak interpretation of the context and grammar.
Paul is not warning Christians about "Philosophy" in general, but about a specific kind of philosophy. One that is based on vain deceit and human tradition, which contradicts the wisdom found in Jesus Christ (Col. 2:3).
We should adopt good philosophy and dismiss bad philosophy, as emphasized in Colossians 2:8. This verse offers a key lesson for believers on how to distinguish between a biblical worldview and a false one.
Remember, according to Christ, the greatest commandment includes loving God with our minds. Let's learn how to think Biblically. (Mat. 22:37)
